KATHLEEN FRANZEN

During her career as a school psychologist, Kathy often took summertime watercolor painting or drawing classes through Community Education programs, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  But not until her first class in 2002 at the Minnesota School of Botanical Art did she find her efforts rewarding.  MSBA has excellent teachers who guide the students in learning how to use quality materials and expert techniques to produce stunning works of art.  After retirement, Kathy pursued and, in 2010, achieved an Advanced Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from MSBA.

In 2006 Kathy organized a Great River Chapter exhibit and retreat at A Center of the Arts in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.  Kathy also organized a joint project between the Garden Club of Ramsey County and GRC.  Members of GRC created 50 pen and ink drawings of native plants that were exhibited at the library and used to make a plant identification guide for the Highland Library public gardens.  In 2009 Kathy organized an exhibit for members of GRC at the Ripple River Art Gallery in Aitkin, Minnesota.  She is currently Director of Exhibits for the MN Boreal Tree project with consultation from Lee Frelich, Ph.D., Forest Ecologist at the University of Minnesota, David McLaughlin, Ph.D., Mycologist at the University of Minnesota, Gerald Niemi, Ph. D., Director of the Center for Water and the Environment at the Natural Resources Research Institute, a part of the University of Minnesota, Duluth and Jana Albers, DNR Forest Health Specialist.
